The question

"Bring 21st-century skills to secondary education"

Basic digital skills, media literacy and computational thinking are 21st-century skills that have become an integral part of our daily lives. In secondary education, too, these skills are becoming an increasingly important part of the curriculum. Codeskillz devised an online teaching method based on gamification to teach secondary school students the skills that prepare them for the future.

Our answer

A serious game at the core of the teaching method

For CodeSkillz, we developed the online teaching method with a serious game at its core. By applying gamification, learning 21st-century skills becomes fun for students. The game engine we developed for CodeSkillz gives the level designers complete freedom and makes sure the story connects perfectly with the students' interests. Because we also developed a management dashboard, levels can easily be added and adjusted online.

gamification

Gamification keeps students engaged

The gamification elements stimulate the students' intrinsic motivation. Students learn better when they are interested, which is why we approached this case as a serious game, with game development as the most important part of the assignment.

Because we developed our own game engine, the possibilities for level design are endless. We work closely with the level designers to make sure their wishes match the capabilities of the game engine.

Dynamic structure

A dynamic teaching method thanks to a management environment

Because the levels are set up dynamically, CodeSkillz can add levels and questions to the teaching method themselves. This lets CodeSkillz design new chapters at lightning speed and have students play them. Levels can also easily be adjusted if something isn't quite right.

Thanks to this flexibility, CodeSkillz can easily experiment with questions and assignments so the course material matches the students' level perfectly.

Successful demo

Funding successfully raised and first customers signed

Thanks in part to the great demos and polished environment, CodeSkillz successfully raised funding. A few months later, after developing the teaching method, CodeSkillz announced that the first school had signed up. They are currently working hard to connect even more schools and are making plans for new levels and extensions of the teaching method.

Testimonial
We worked closely with Dutch Coding Company on the development of the student platform for our digital teaching method. The result is a beautiful platform on which students work on their 21st-century skills!
